Gemini 4 and the world-model bet

You can describe the structural difference between DeepMind's 2026–2027 approach and OpenAI's or Anthropic's, and name the three pieces that make up the world-model bet.

Refreshed: May 2026.

If Anthropic's 2026 story is staged release and OpenAI's is continuous memory, DeepMind's is world models and recursive improvement. The chapter has three lessons; the opener sketches why those three things hang together as a single thesis.

Piece one: Project Genie. Project Genie became generally available on Google AI Ultra on January 29, 2026. Genie 3 generates interactive 720p worlds at 24fps with multi-minute consistency — give it a prompt and you can navigate the resulting 3D environment in real time. Genie 4 is expected in 2026–2027. As a consumer product, it's an interactive video-generation tool. As an internal research artifact, it's something more interesting: a training environment generator.

Piece two: agents trained inside generated worlds. DeepMind's Sima line of agents is designed to act in 3D environments. Combine Sima with Genie and you get a loop — Genie generates worlds, Sima learns to navigate and act in them, and the resulting data trains better agents. The loop is one of the rare credible answers to the real-world-data exhaustion problem that started worrying labs in 2024. Synthetic environments can scale where scraped text can't.
